About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Winnipeg at 85 Princess St, Deer + Almond is a striking culinary destination that has earned its place among Canada’s Top 100 Restaurants. This intimate dining gem, bathed in warm pink lighting, invites guests to embark on a thoughtfully crafted gastronomic journey centered around contemporary Canadian cuisine with an artful twist.

The menu at Deer + Almond showcases an inspired balance of bold flavors and delicate nuances, perfectly reflected in signature dishes like the Risotto, where creamy, perfectly al dente rice mingles with deep umami notes, or the succulent spicy glazed pumpkin pork belly which pairs melt-in-your-mouth richness with a refreshing scallion salad and silky koji butter sauce. For seafood lovers, the Yellowfin Tuna Sandwich and the goldeye & whitefish caviar latke offer an elegant taste of regional aquatic treasures, each bite highlighting freshness and craftsmanship.

The desserts, notably the silky Peanut Semifreddo paired with sea salt and a decadent flourless cake, provide a complex interplay of textures and flavors—smooth, crunchy, and subtly sweet. Customers may also delight in seasonal sweets like the fall-spiced pumpkin crème brûlée or the tropical twist of ube ice cream parfait with coconut crumble and bright lime granita.

These dishes aren’t just food; they’re edible works of art. The presentation is thoughtful yet approachable, often served on handcrafted pottery that drew praise for its charm and uniqueness, creating a sensory experience that is as visual as it is gustatory.

While the pricing, especially for the tasting menu at $90 for a four-course dinner, might give some pause, the experience and attentiveness from Chef Mandel Hitzer and his team underpin the value. Guests have noted the combination of refined, intricate dishes served with heartfelt storytelling adds a deeper layer to the dining experience. The intimate dining room, though cozy and lively with natural buzz, cultivates a memorable evening out, whether for a special occasion or an adventurous night on the town.

Portions are modest but thoughtfully composed, encouraging diners to savor each component—from the playful amuse bouche to the finishing touches of beet ice cream or the house focaccia. The bartop menu offers a la carte options with dishes like the smoky mb pork terrine perogies or the richly umami mushroom salad, allowing for a customizable culinary adventure that complements the main experience.

In summary, Deer + Almond is a must-visit for those who appreciate sophisticated flavors executed with precision and creativity. It is an intimate, sensory-rich haven where every dish tells a story, engaging all senses and celebrating both local ingredients and bold culinary artistry. I heard this spot is listed among the Top 100 Restaurants in Canada ????????, but the reviews are pretty divided. Some people rave about the food, while others feel the flavors don’t quite justify the price. Their dinner menu is 4 dishes for $90 per person, which felt a bit steep for me, so I asked for the à la carte menu instead (still pricey though ). Since I wasn’t too hungry after having a drink earlier, I went for two small plates: Pepe’s Grandma’s Chicken Soup This one is on the more affordable side. It tastes like a Mexican-style chicken soup ???????? with a hint of jalapeño—but wow, the spice really kicks in . The broth didn’t fully impress me… it had a slightly “gamey” aroma, like something wasn’t cleaned properly. But the chicken itself was incredibly soft and tender, which saved the dish. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5 Deer Carpaccio It’s rare to see venison on a menu, so I had to try it. The plate comes with fresh fruits, blueberries, and greens, plus a crunchy texture from nuts—almost like puffed rice. The venison was so delicious, and you absolutely have to eat everything together for the full experience . Halfway through I realized… isn’t this basically their signature dish inspired by the name Deer & Almond? And honestly, it deserves that spotlight — beautifully balanced and truly memorable . Food-wise, it was a great experience, but I’m giving the restaurant 4 stars because the service lacked some attention to detail. With better service, it could’ve been perfect.

The best steelhead trout and oysters I ever had. The tuna was also very good. Dessert in comparison is a bit mediocre. The restaurant is quite small and a bit noisy.

Since seeing this place rated highly on Canada's Top 100 Restaurants, I've been eager to pay Deer + Almond a visit. For my 30th, my fiancee and I decided to finally make it a date! D+A stood out from the outside with its rich pink lighting. When we arrived, our hostess was kind and accommodating given we had arrived for our reservation close to 30 minutes early. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant which allowed us to see all of its interesting decorative elements. Our table was ready to go with cutlery neatly positioned over a ceramic, c-shaped cutlery stand which was a cute touch. We ordered drinks followed by our 4 courses with no add ons. The drinks we had, a martini for her and a peach rum drink for myself, were fantastic and had us ready for our meal which began with a small but tasty tuna cracker treat. The food overall was good, however there was one standout dish on both ends of the spectrum. The Bison & Pork Tortellini Dumplings were amazing. Excellently spiced meat filling in a rich and creamy broth that both me and my fiancee adored. The Deer Carpaccio, however, was underwhelming, especially given it came with an upcharge of $10. The deer itself lacked flavor and while the beats were tasty, the dish as a whole left us wanting more. Throughout the service, we were asked numerous times if we were good on drinks despite having said we were after the first one, which felt a little pushy. While it was a special occasion, I wasn't keen on following my cocktail with more alcohol, especially given the former had lasted me through my entire meal! Deer and almond was a solid high-dining experience and I could definitely see how it earned its reputation, though some elements of our night could have been improved. I would be interested in trying it's other food options if I find myself returning!

Mandel Hitzer and his team are brilliant. Yes, it's not the cheapest place to eat at, but I am quite tired of paying a hundred dollar for a forgettable meal. This is everything but forgettable. Every piece of the tasting menu was delicate, and intricate and perfect. Mandel delivered each meal with heartfelt explanations. He told me that it's not only about creating a perfect meal, it's about making it consistently. Nailed it. Bravo.

The 4-course menu was decent, but I probably won’t come back given the steep price. Salmon, albacore tuna and steelhead trout were the highlights. Other dishes were just OK. Another highlight was the pottery plates and utensil holder. We were so intrigued that we looked up the artist online.

1 of the best meals I've ever had, I wish I was staying longer in Winnipeg so I could go again. We did the 4 course dinner service, it was perfect. I think the beef tartare was the best bite of food I've ever had.
